2) allow for globs like ignores=X-* and ignores=List-*

Can't you achieve this by simply removing the "extras" line from the
mhl format file? (Just checked ... yes, that makes it so everything
not explicitly matched doesn't get displayed).
I guess that doesn't help if you want odd unknown ones to be displayed
but to skip known ones en masse, e.g. List-*.
