Ralph, does configuring with something like this help? --with-ndbm=-lgdbm --with-ndbmheader=gdbm-ndbm.h
Almost. Ditching the -l and switching to
./configure --with-ndbm=gdbm_compat --with-ndbmheader=gdbm-ndbm.h
worked.
