[Nmh-workers] yahoo mailing list addresses

2015-02-24 17:27:37
hi --

i'm on another list, based at yahoo, which exposes a bit of a mystery
(to me).

i think that as a consequence of implementing their version of DMARC
(which broke most mailing lists (including their own) for yahoo
recipients), mail from yahoo lists now looks something like this --
i've included only the "interesting" headers from the point of view of
an email client that wishes to reply to the mail:

    To: Shopsmith10ERusers@yahoogroups.com
    X-Original-From: Paul Fox <pgf@foxharp.boston.ma.us>
    From: "Paul Fox pgf@foxharp.boston.ma.us [Shopsmith10ERusers]"
<Shopsmith10ERusers@yahoogroups.com>
    Sender: Shopsmith10ERusers@yahoogroups.com
    Date: Sat, 14 Feb 2015 17:04:00 -0500
Subject: Re: [SS10ERusers] unusual pulley removal [1 Attachment]
    Reply-To: Shopsmith10ERusers@yahoogroups.com

note that the From: line, which would normally simply be the author's
name/address, is instead the mailing list address, with the author
contact information included as part of the extra text in double quotes.

this makes it impossible, from a traditional email client (nmh being
the prototypical example of such :-), to reply-to-sender automatically.

as a way of hopefully helping folks avoid sending personal messages to
the list, i mentioned this on the above list. someone immediately
replied that when they use either Outlook or their ISP's webmail
client (both of which i assume are using IMAP to get to their
mailstore), they are presented with a clickable "reply to sender" link
which does, in fact, work.

so now i'm wondering: is there some IMAP feature, or possibly some
new standard (or, more likely, new convention) for pulling the
author's address either from an X-Original-From: header, or from the
quoted text in the From: line?
