Subject: Re: Protocol Action: Privacy Enhanced Mail to Historic Standard

As an outsider but early enthuiastic supporter of the PEM project, I have to
say I am becoming more and more reminded of NSF's unlamented EXPRES program.

It's been a **long** time, folks, and progress seems retrograde to us, the
unwashed and uninitiated who merely want to protect our e-mail exchanges.

Perhaps the project is nearly OBE, and when we can go buy a secure mail
product from Apple or Microsoft it will have served its purpose and can be
retired.

Steve,

It's coming right up. Speaking for TIS, we're scrambling to get
TIS/PEM out the door. Our schedule on this is measured in days.
(Unfortunately, our scheduled has been measured in days for several
weeks :-) We're currently assembling a list of potential beta sites.
(We want beta sites that will get it installed, use it heavily and
provide informed feedback. You're welcome to apply or hang back one
round, whichever suits you best.)

There also has to be a certificate issuance and registration hierarchy
in place. The initial cut at this will be rudimentary, but it should
evolve fairly smoothly into a scalable, broad-based system fairly
quickly.

In case it's not clear, I share your frustration. All of us involved
are anxious to have this out the door and into operation as quickly as
possible.

Steve
