- The sending of non-text messages such as EDI

I dont understand why EDI messages are considered to be non-text.

It is true that:

1 - Binary information may be included in a multipart message

But that can be taken care of by any multi-part mail.

2 - A unit separator can be substitued for a "*" in an
        interchange.

But that can be returned to a "*" by EDI style
canonicaliztion (?? is that how it's spelt ??)

3 - Encryption in employed at the EDI level (X12.58)

But that would eliminate the need for PEM

In any case, the requirements of EDI do not presently include binary
transmission media unless special characteristics are used.
