The ANSI X12 EDI standard allows binary such a CAD drawings to be
embedded in some types of EDI messages.  Also, EDI messages may
contain their own encryption.  

One other way that EDI differs from normal text is that is it need no
be broken into reasonable lenght lines.  Depending on the delimiting
characters chosen, EDI may appear to text based applications as one
very looooong line.
