What I don't understand is why people think it's such a great thing to
improve only the key size and encyrption algorithm complexity of DES.
Seems to me that you would want to go to (1) a bigger key, (2) more
calculations (but based on the heavy investigated and tested DES
algorithm), (3) a bigger IV, and (4) a bigger block size (but still a
multiple of 64 bits). I just can't see bothering with improving only
1 and 2 unless you think that EDE2 is so "standardized" that it is not
much to include. it.

I concur with Steve Crocker's observation: we do not want to
proliferate modes unnecessarily. The form of the argunent should not
be "if it's only a little more work let's do it" but rather "what will
adding yet another variant buy us?"
