The question is, how many people are using ASN compilers 
and how many are using hand generated parsers.

Personally I can get my hand crafted code to accept several forms, and
generate one of them (which ever ). If you are using an ASN compiler
you don't have this choice.

(I went through a similiar exercise 10 years ago when I was implementing X25
  for our local network. Every new manufacturer's X25 would have a diff problem 
interworking even though they were standards complient.)
