Tom, DNs do exist independent of encoding. The DER, including the complex ones that apply to RDNs that consist of multiple AVAs, are needed to uniquely encode a DN when the DN is to be signed, e.g., in a certificate. However, as you guessed, DNs exist independent of any encoding and thus can be created without having to apply any encoding rules in the DN generation process. Steve
