Other than X9 (financial applications) and X.12/EDIFACT (EDI),
can you mention some of those other standards? Certainly CALS
fits into here somewhere, as does SGML, but I am not aware
of any attempts to integrate digital signatures into those
constructs as yet, although the need is obvious.

I think that PEM will blaze the trail, and some of these
other communities will profit by having stood on the 
shoulders of those who came before. But the
basic issues will remain the same.
