PGP is now available from a commercial source.
An agreement was reached between Phil Zimmermann, the father of
PGP and ViaCrypt, a division of Lemcom systems, to make a version
of PGP available in the US and Canada that was in complete
harmony with the patents held by PKP and with the export laws of
the Department of State. This package will have a clean version
of the RSA and IDEA algorithms which are licensed by PKP and
restricted for export. In other respects, the package will use
the very successful code generated by Zimmermann and other supporters
of PGP throughout the world.
The impact of this development on the spread of PGP in the US and
Canada could be quite large as the only legal impediment to the
adoption of PGP in the commercial world has now been removed.
This commercial version will have no impact on the public domain
software which will continue to be available at sites throughout the
world. In the US, the current PGP 2.3a version can be obtained as
pub/cypherpunks/pgp/pgp23A.zip by anon FTP from soda.berkeley.edu.
Additional information on the commercial version can be obtained from
ViaCrypt at 602-944-0773, or on PGP from peace(_at_)bix(_dot_)com(_dot_)
