Ella,
You and Richard Ankney mentioned FIPS 5, which I confess I have
never heard of. What is it, and how can I get a copy easily?
I appreciate the input on the DOD naming scheme. I an a little concerned
to see the depth of the organization chain that is being proposed, however.
Surely if GTE Laboratories can register with ANSI at the national
level, we could register DOD and the Department of the Army
at the national level as well?
I also find it quite surprising that you would route to a locality or post,
rather than to an individual unit. I would have thought they would have
done something more along the lines of the AUTODIN routing system,
where official messages are routed to a few hubs or gateways that knows
where individual units are located and can redirect them. Embedding
locality information in the name would seem to violate OPSEC and other
requirements, as well as tearing up the directory structure rather badly
whenever a unit is redeployed.
However it will be done eventually for official messages, do you have any
comments regarding my suggestion for a scheme for naming residential
persons (those who may choose to obtain a certificate in thier private
capacity, rather than as a member of the military)?
