"Bids in for Defense e-mail system
Four systems integrators have submitted bids to build a worldwide
electronic-mail system for the Defense Department.
Harris Corp., TRW Inc., PRC Inc., and Loral Federal Systems Group,
previously IBM Federal Systems Co., turned in technical proposals for
the Defense Message System on June 13. Cost proposals were due last
week.
At least half-dozen prime contractors once planned to bid on the
procurement being managed by the Air Force Standards Systems Center at
Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala. But the list of contenders was shortened
as questions grew about the complex architecture.
Plans for DMS, one of the most ambitious federal e-mail projects
yet attempted, call for adherence to the Open Systems Interconnection
X.400 mail and X.500 directory services protocols."
