closure and restart

1994-12-14 14:10:00

There is so much good stuff going on on this board that I suggest the
WG reorganizes itself to take stock of the directions which are
emerging.

new goals might be formulated, and new work topics assigned to produce
a next round of IDs building on the threads weve seen people get
excited about.

I personally still see the fundamental goal being one of getting the
event horizon for massive deployment of straight-forward basic private
mail down to the very near future. And MIME-PEM worries me for that
because of its delaying impacts on the critical masses required of 2
underlying and tighly-coupled infrastructures - the CAs (or not-CAs!), and the
MIME-MTS required for the current goal.

That MIME-PEM has spurred a next round of secured object architecture
analysis and discussion is evident. It introduces new service goals and
options, and (i believe) a new paradigm for co-relating the MTS
messaging security model to message object security. Similarly for http
to html hypermedia security interactions. This will be lots of fun; but
is going to take a while, I forsee.

Can we agree on a new fundamental goal, or reassert the former and
concentrate efforts accordingly?

I do judge the list of have displayed a uniform consensus on the list
that MIME-PEm is of vital interest to the area. I cant honestly say
that I can judge there to have been consencus that its the way to go to
achieve Dave Crocker's goal of a fast solution to a late problem of
providing private email to lots of users, though.

I think we should appeal to Dave to give us all a direction. For
leadership is now missing to consolidate the gains weve made in the
last week.
