My fair point and example is, still, such a statement has little

Peter, since Stef sometimes attributes the linear/exponential phrase to me,
I think it worth pointing out that there is a definite meaning intended.
In Stef's note, he left as an exercise to the reader to figure out the
implication of the asserted trends. In my usual fashion, I don't.
If X.400 is increasing linearly in a market that is growing exponentially,
then it is experiencing something called 'decreasing market share'. Now
this might not be an important issue in your line of work, but it sure is
important to people producing and selling product.
Take exception with the factual assertions, if you wish -- and as Stef
requested, it would be great to find some factual basis for
counter-assertions -- but please don't dismiss the clever comment as
meaningless.
The more general intent behind such comments, of course, has to do with the
need to distinguish between dreaming the future, versus living the present.
The Internet has a very consistent tendency to assert the needs of the
present, independent of any particular agency's dreams. That should be a
very big concern for this working group, when it tries to decide on
timelines for its work.
