I used to have the same view. Then I was told about the explosive
problem with credit card fraud. I had thought it was a fixed "cost of
doing business" but, instead, it is entirely out of control.
This has nothing to do with the Internet but it needs to be fixed
and it turns out that adding commerece to the Internet makes it possible to
reduce/eliminate the explosive nature of the problem, if we design things
right.
In my view, the key to this is to keep merchants from getting
credit card numbers.
