Curiosly, I now seem to be on the s/mime list, though I don't
recall sending another subscription request.
I never received any notification either... I just started receiving SMIME-DEV
list mail one day. I assume that Steve Dusse was responsible for this since I
was having a discussion with him at the time, but he never said anything to
confirm it so my assumption may well be in error.

on that list, though it seems to be mostly other people asking if the list
is active.
That's what I have seen as well.
However, I reposted my message concerning deficiencies in S/MIME yesterday. You
should have received that by now -- I received my copy of my posting almost
immediately. If you did not then we may be on different lists...
My apologies for wasting PEM-DEV bandwidth discussing issues with another
list. My only reason for not taking this offline is I figure there are probably
several others in the same boat as Dave and I and this list is my best chance
of reaching them.
