Right, Sten: you are making that assumption.

But the assumption itself is wrong.

* LASTFOLDER ?? [pattern]

works perfectly well.  $- *is* a pseudovariable, however, and

* - ?? [pattern]

would fail.  Think of $LASTFOLDER as a real variable always equal to $-.
