Hello all,
At a former site, I used to run procmail with no problems.
We recently moved to a new site which has a completely different system
layout, with new server machines and various different operating systems.
Attempting to use procmail at this site consistently results in disaster,
and I'm wondering if anyone can shed some light on my situation, or share
some similar experiences.
Procmail performs sufficiently (for the most part -- there was some funny
stuff in my log file), but it apparently doesn't exit properly, since
the process table on the mailserver machine shortly fills up with stale
procmail processes. When this occurs, you can't even log into the mail
server machine, since your login shell requires another process. However,
the admins were able to determine that the excess processes were procmail
ones. Beyond that, the admins here don't know what to do to fix this
(besides shut procmail off).
The version of procmail is 3.10. It was compiled directly on the mailserver
machine, since that's where it gets run, but then installed in my home area
which resides on a different server and OS (may or may not be significant).
The mailserver is an IBM 580 or 590 running AIX level 3250.
The fileserver where the binaries are stored is Auspex 1.7M1Z2/SunOS 4.1.3_U1.
My ~/.forward file contained (verbatim, including quotes):
"|IFS=' ';exec /ived/wz40ft/bin/procmail #wz40ft"
My $MAILDIR contained a bunch of files with names like "_B09Gpntpcia0",
which were one byte large and contained a zero. The filedates were all
within one minute of another, so these may be resulting from some diffferent
problem.
The log file contained a bunch of
stty: TXGETLD: Not a typewriter
error messages, as well as a bunch of
procmail: Failed forking "test"
error messages, but there's no way of knowing if these all occurred together
from one event, or were spread out, one per incoming mail.
Thanks in advance for any clues...
Paul
