Using empty parentheses never occurred to me. There's the answer for an
all-purpose syntactic separator whenever one doesn't like the way parts of
a regexp look if they're just run together.
* ^TO()whatever
will be the same to procmail as
* ^TOwhatever
and not appear ambiguous or potentially unpleasant, and writing
* ^TO()_regexpthatstartswithanunderscore
prevents procmail from misinterpreting the condition as
* ^TO_()regexpthatshouldhavestartedwithanunderscore
