Unidentified subject!

I am trying to build procmail mail 3.10 on Dec Ultrix 4.2c, using
gcc 2.7.2.  The 'make' crashes my system, apparently during the
lockingtest. The HISTORY notes this as a sometimes-milestone :)
for the last version.  Is there a work-around for this?  Trashing
the Ultrix systems, or even upgrading, will not be an option for a
good while yet.
