commented out "from" line at the end of messages

I've no idea where to begin here....

Problem:  98% of my messages now have the "From " line to the next  
message as their last line, commented out.

IE if I got a message from "joe(_at_)smoe(_dot_)com" and then one from  
"eddie(_at_)wherever(_dot_)com" Joe's message would end with

> From eddie(_at_)wherever(_dot_)com Mon Dec 31 08:12:12 1996
and Eddie's message gets a new "From " line.

What is causing this?  An errant 'formail' line somewhere?
