I started using procmail today, so please don't flame me if I should
have gotten the answer from an FAQ (is there one?)
I am not a systems person, but a naive user, so please keep any
answers simple.
OK, so I've set up my .procmailrc the way the manual says, and it all
works beautifully, sorting my huge volume of mail into folders and
(hurray!) throwing masses of it away correctly. So it finally looks as
though I might be able to do some mathematics instead of dealing with
all my mail by hand.
Now I want to start writing perl scripts to deal with the individual
folders which procmail has made for me. But I'm worried that procmail
will deliver mail to my folder while perl is operating on it, thus
producing total confusion. So the right solution should be to move the
folder first to another place, under the protection of a lock file.
Finally, here is my question: is there a program that will act like
Unix mv? If I do mv A B, I need lock file protection for A but not for
B, because it will be done manually, though there would be nothing
wrong with lock file protection for B as well, which would make it
safer to automate the process of dealing with the mail.
I could write my own little
program in sh or perl, but I'm nervous of doing something wrong.
The manual for procmail refers to a program called movemail, which
might be what I want. But it isn't on our system, as far as I can
ascertain. I'm not a subscriber to this list, so please send email
direct to me. Thank you.
