Since you end up "gulping" the message anyway, how about generating a
response of your own which looks sufficiently like a real bounce to
have the desired effect? You probably wouldn't have to "forge" a
bounce which looks 100% authentic -- anything with the right layout
and keywords is likely to work, even if it's apparent that it is not
automatically generated. 

Just a thought -- let me know if this works,
