try mailing to 'procmail-request(_at_)nformatik(_dot_)RWTH-Aachen(_dot_)DE'
with a subject of
'unsubscribe'.

I have done so SEVERAL times with no luck.

You could have mentioned this before. As was, it sounded like you
hadn't tried at all. What response did you get when you mailed to
procmail-request? It should have least told you why it though it
couldn't process your request, whether it thinks you're not currently
subscribed, or some other reason.

Hmm, I'm not sure which version of smartlist is being used at
informatik.RWTH-Aachen.DE, but if it's an older one, it won't properly
handle subscribe and unsubscribe requests that are only in the subject
and not the body of the message. Depending on what sort of reponse
smartlist sent earlier, I'd suggest trying it again with the request in
the body of your message.

If your email address has changed since when you originally subscribed,
then you'll need to include your original address in the request, ala:

        unsubscribe my-old(_at_)address(_dot_)here

As a final thing to check, are you sure that the procmail list isn't
being locally exploded, so that you aren't on the list at
Informatik.RWTH-Aachen.DE, but rather on one at your own site? Have
you asked your local system administrator for help? (That's what
they're paid to do, you know.) If you can contain your frustration,
there are more things to try.

I'm about ready to start
bouncing the list back to the list.

How is this better than dropping the messages in /dev/null?
