For those of you with a dialup connection:
Pegasus Mail has a cool 'Selective Download' feature, which downloads
only the headers of the messages (including size, sender, subject, a few
others.) Then you can pick and choose which ones to download the whole
bodies from. Plus Pegasus is free (unless you want manuals).
Not quite equivalent to server-side filtering, but workable.
