Now, I can see why that makes sense do do that (need to escape the ".");
but then why do most folks not do that?--Just an error, is did you not
have to in versions pre 3.11?

Just an error, or you think mismatches are unlikely. 
  (I might for example take the risk of accepting mail addressed to
era(_at_)ikiafi, era(_at_)ikibfi, era(_at_)ikicfi etc etc with 
"era(_at_)iki(_dot_)fi" in one of
my recipes.)
