Previously the shell account machine was the mail server. That's no longer

Could somebody please describe exactly how sendmail 8.8.5 determines
whereto find the .forward file on a host.
I'm guessing my ISP needs the following.
1. A password database that indicates which users home directory is which
ie. from the machine that use to be the mail server.
AND
2. An NFS mount of the users home directories.. Probably an automount?
This is what we are using, and it works fine IF your ISP has installed
procmail on the mail server machine, and told sendmail that it's okay to
execute procmail from your .forward file. The change was made here after
I had procmail set up, and it went without a hitch.
