Re: Return-Path: question

Bill,

I match my lists with expressions like:

* ^From
(owner-)?procmail(-owner|-outgoing|-request)?(_at_)Informatik(_dot_)RWTH-Aachen(_dot_)DE
* ^From
(owner-)?majordomo-users(-owner|-outgoing|-request)?(_at_)greatcircle(_dot_)com
* ^From
(owner-)?list-managers(-owner|-outgoing|-request)?(_at_)greatcircle(_dot_)com
* ^From (owner-)?bugtraq(-owner|-outgoing|-request)?(_at_)crimelab(_dot_)com
* ^From
(owner-)?ppp-users(-owner|-outgoing|-request)?(_at_)Informatik(_dot_)RWTH-Aachen(_dot_)DE

Which i've found to be very reliable.

Hello,

I used to filter the procmail list by the header:
Return-Path: <procmail-request(_at_)Informatik(_dot_)RWTH-Aachen(_dot_)DE>

But the last few days I have been receiving some messages that don't have
the Return-Path header. Am I correct that the Return-Path header is placed
on the message by the local mail system?

By the look of the headers it seems that Netcom is using different sendmail
versions on different mailhosts.

I've notice that the messages that come in without a Return-Path header
also include this Received: line:

Received: from Campino.Informatik.RWTH-Aachen.DE
(campino.Informatik.RWTH-Aachen.DE [137.226.116.240])
        by mail5.netcom.com (8.8.5-r-beta/8.8.5/(NETCOM v1.01)) with ESMTP
id JAA23930;  Fri, 6 Jun 1997 09:30:35 -0700 (PDT)

Where the ones that do have the Return-Path line are from a different mail
host and a different version of Sendmail:

Received: from Campino.Informatik.RWTH-Aachen.DE
(campino.Informatik.RWTH-Aachen.DE [137.226.116.240]) by mail6 (8.6.13/Netcom)
        id JAA18999; Fri, 6 Jun 1997 09:33:45 -0700

My question: Is the Return-Path an optional header, and is it something I
shouldn't rely on in my procmail recipes? Is the "From_" header a better
and more reliable choice?

Is Netcom really using beta software for its paying customers?

Thanks,

Bill Moseley
