No, I haven't talked about an automatical reply. I've talked about users
who use crap mailers (e.g. MUSH, micro$oft mail, or $un mailtool) that
don't insert an In-Reply-To field, when they reply to my (or, in
mailing-lists, other people's) messages.
If you're trying to figure out which of your old letters somebody is
Yes, this is what I want to do (but not only with the replies to my own
messages).
answering, and you keep copies of the mail that you send, can't you look it
up by the text you wrote that is quoted in the reply or by the subject line
if it wasn't changed (beyond adding Re: if it wasn't already there)? If
This is possible: this is what I do for the moment. But it takes time,
in particular in mailing-lists where there often are a lot of replies
(moreover several people don't have a correct GMT time).
there is no quoted text of yours in the response, how can you hope to find
something else in it that specifies which letter from you is being answered?
In general, there's some quoted text. But the most important is: before
this quoted text, there's a line like "On <date>, <user> wrote:", and
from this information, it is possible (but not very simple) to retrieve
the msgid of the quoted message (provided this msgid is stored in a cache
with the sender name and the date).
If you want to make sure you have those headers on your outgoing responses,
formail -r[t] puts them there. If you want to insert them into mail you
receive, I don't understand the value, and the task will often be impossible.
No, I know it will be often possible. But writing such a recipe would
take some time... I only want to know if someone has already written
one.
