Mailing lists are starting to use evil footers at the end of each message,

If you don't have any objection to enumerating the footers or parts of
them, no problem. Solving it in a generic fashion is impossible
because the footers will always be more or less ad hoc.
(A real neat hack would be to make a system which adapts, i.e. it
would identify messages as being from a list, and after a few
instances learn which parts are identical in all messages. Maybe after
I graduate ...)
***************** REMOVE THIS FOOTER... DO NOT REPOST ********************
(( 4 lines ))

| sed -e '/^\** *REMOVE THIS FOOTER/{' -ed -eq -e}
and another has this:
=--------------------------------------------------------------=
(( 37!!!!! lines deleted ))

| sed -e '/^ *=---*= *$/{' -ed -eq -e}
Testing and merging these into a single recipe is left as an exercise.
Myself, I actually add something like " procmail: horrendous .sig
trimmed" in place of the removed footer.
