Yes, that's correct.
However, I do have one. Right now it just contains a line to send
split messages to MediaMail's reassembly program...

Since you have a .forward, though, all bets are off. sendmail invokes
that program for you and calls it a day. When you use a .forward file
sendmail never invokes the local mailer for you, it uses the .forward
file instead. Since you say procmail is invoked when you replace
/bin/mail with procmail, reassembler is probably using /bin/mail to do
the final delivery.
If I were you I'd probably ditch the .forward file and have my .procmailrc
send the appropriate messages through the reassembler, but the details
vary depending on the options reassembler gives you.
