Q:What is the best way to locate the version of sendmail one is using?
try:
sendmail -d0 (zero)
among several things, this will display the version (right at the top).
or:
sendmail -bt (address test mode)
$v (display version macro)
Barring that, how about checking the recieved lines on the messages you've
got - Sendmail generally shows its version in the SMTP stampings there.
And Barring that, you can usually get it by telnet mailhost 25
(that is, telnet to port 25 on your SMTP server - the welcome banner
usually identifies)
I'm using whatever sendmail comes with SunOS 5.5.1, and, the manpages
don't seem to list a -version command (-v is verbose mode, but, I can't
seem to get it to spit out the version).
According to procmail digests, I want to at least make sure the sendmail is
version 8.8.5 or better.
For what, exactly? 8.8.6 is (AFAIK) the current _release_ version. Now, I
run 8.8.5 currently, but I don't see that you should have any concern with
running a slightly older version - and I don't recall any recent mention of
procmail dependancies on the current rev or so of sendmail. Enlighten me.
