unfortunately i dont have access to the /etc/aliases file. but i can have
emails to any name(_at_)mydomain(_dot_)com delivered to my mailbox. from there
i filter based on the username.
i havent looked at the SmartList documentation closely. infact i didnt look
at it at all after it said i need another account to set it up. which i
cannot
do.

is there a way i could set up SmartList in the same account?

thanks for the help
Hi,
Smartlist doesn't require either root access or a separate account,
though those are recommended (one of the mavens out there can tell you why).
I installed Smartlist in my account with neither.
        Since you said:

I assume that the sysop is willing to make an alias for you in the
aliases file. It's the easiest way for them to do it.
Steps to install Smartlist and set up a mailing list.
1) Check the version of procmail on your system (procmail -v I think).
2) Download copies of both procmail and smartlist. Make sure that they are at
the same version level as your existing procmail. If you have installed
procmail yourself and are calling it through a .forward file, there may be some
differences. I just don't know.
3) Create a directory (let's call it temp) in your home directory and put the
procmail and smartlist files there.
4) untar procmail and smartlist
5) READ THE DOCS ON SMARTLIST. They should be enough to get you going.
6) Create a directory for smartlist (I did SmartList under my home directory).
7) To the temp/procmailv### directory under hour home directory. It was
created
when you untarred the file.
8) Type make. This will build procmail (compile and link).
9) Change to the smartlist directory (it's underneath the temp/procmailv###
directory).
10) Type "sh install.sh dirname", where dirname is the directory created in
step 5.
11) Creating lists is fairly trivial once it's installed. It tells you what to
put in the aliases file. Send that to your sysop.

Once I got past my Unix ignorance, I was pleasantly surprised how easy
it was to install. I've had more problems installing windoze software.
