  -- the technical issues are addressed (such as mail loops and
     auto-bouncing mailing lists),

  -- the bounce is courteous (so as not to offend the occasional
     non-spam stranger),

  -- you maintain and regularly inspect a concise (one line per
     message, say) log of what gets bounced just to make sure things
     are under control, and

  -- you don't get a lot of mail from legitimate strangers,

then autobouncing mail from the unknown makes life a _lot_ easier.
