logfile questions

I've got a number of things working quite nicely at the moment, but I
am still having problems with one thing.  When I add a

$N=^M
LOG = $N "Put this msg into my log file" $N

I end up with 

$N Put this msg into my log file $N From: ......

In my log files.
I want them to look like:

Put this msg into my log file
From: ...

What am I doing wrong?
