Automatic Filtering and Forwarding

1997-11-19 18:50:02
Hi;

I've just learned that Procmail resides on our system and I might be
interested in trying to use it to create a simple automated mailing list, if
that's possible. BTW, I am just a user.

Can Procmail filter out certain incoming messages and reroute or forward
them to an alias address (ie; the alias comprising several addresses).
Assuming I would be able to ask the addressees to add a keyword in the
Subject line, would that, presumably, in addition to their address, help
Procmail differentiate list intended mail from regular personal mail?

Version that's running on our system and other information;

procmail v3.11pre7 1997/04/28 written and created by Stephen R. van den Berg
[...]
Locking strategies:     dotlocking, fcntl(), lockf()
Default rcfile:         $HOME/.procmailrc
Your system mailbox:    /var/spool/mail/mharris

OS on our server;

UNIX(r) System V Release 4.0

My own expertise in UNIX; very, very basic; just a few commands.

Is it possible to have Procmail do this - in short, select certain incoming
messages and forward them out to multiple addresses, all automatically? And
if so, how?

Thanks for any help,

Marilyn
