Did you come from a DOS background? Don't worry, I did too.
"*" is NOT the correct wildcard spec in unix regular expressions.
The correct wildcard spec is ".*", so your filter should be
changed to...
* ^Subject:.*damocles
...note *NO SPACE BETWEEN THE DOT AND THE ASTERISK*.
