What is the legal character set for usernames and domain
names in email addresses? For the moment I'm assuming
[\w\.-]+ for both parts, but I'm thinking there could
be more characters in the set.
Non-authoritative answer:
It is a mistake to equate the local part of an address and a username.
ANY character can be part of the local part of an email address. Some
characters may need to be quoted or encoded -- non-7-bit characters are
not guaranteed safe passage through SMTP, and some 7-bit characters are
treated specially (@, for example).
