newlines, as in, the raw file contains text\nmoretext\n
but '\n' isn't literally '\n', but rather REALLY a newline - same as if you
opened up vi on a new file, and started entering text:
text[press enter-key]
moretext[press enter-key]
and so on.
*nix uses LFs for newlines, whereas MS-DOS uses CRLF (Carriage Return AND
Line Feed).
