It does work; perhaps you have a stray space or tab to the right of
the backslash, and that's causing the problem. Or are you starting the
continuation line with another asterisk, perhaps? Also note that
leading space on the continuation line will be ignored; maybe you were
expecting it to count, and that's the problem?

Cue Twilight Zone music. It's working. Didn't last time, but is now. So
I'm not entirely sure what was going on. But it seems to be working
(although I've had to up LINEBUF a bit).
