In addition to what you propose, in which I am also quite interested,
so please follow this up on the list or with me, you should also
consider making the transport more effective.

We used to use UUCP in the early 90's to connect between Namibia and
South Africa and within Namibia and found that the Taylor UUCP "I"
protocol is quite decent, in particular when you configure the MTA to
batch several messages and gzip them into the UUCP spool directory.

"batch gzip sendmail" :-)-O
