Subject: What do you make of the backup copy?

[snip]
Just about every procmail resource on the net says: "DO start your
procmailrc with a recipe that copies each incoming place in a default
mailbox, BEFORE anything else, just in case"

[snip]
The problem is that after one month like this, I have my mail folder
containing about 5 megs of messages and one huge ( >30 meg) file
created and filled by that very first "just in case" recipe.

[snip]
In other words, how much and how long does this recipe make sense:

:0c:
$HOME/.MAIL/mail.backup

and how do you cope with the huge amount of email it keeps around?

The idea of a backup file is to protect you in the event you do something
dumb with your filters and
destroy important mail. You should consider having a cron job copy your
backup file to a secondary
backup file (replacing the secondary's contents) and then emptying the
backup file on a regular basis.
If you "roll" the files over once a week, it will give you a week or two to
discover any problems before
you have lost any mail.
