RE: Dealing with sub-hosts' bounced email

2002-04-09 15:35:05
Suggestion: make it a requirement that they send the mail with
*THEIR* address as the return address. THEIR delivery problems
shouldn't be your mess to clean up. Since it is YOUR server, you should
be able to enforce this policy.

Every script runs under my user id. I do not have root privileges, it is
a virtual hosting scenario - but let's not go there :-)

From: "Name 1" <info(_at_)domain1(_dot_)com>
From: "Name 2" <info(_at_)domain2(_dot_)com>

This means WHAT to us?

Please explain the significance - CORRELATE the above to something
meaningful in the context of handling the messages. Most of us are well
aware that bounce messages come From: an address someplace.

I did not indicate that I was talking of the _bounce_ coming "From:" but
that the originators of the messages have their "From" in the format I
outline.

Bounced messages are inconsistent in format, may include multiple
addresses (and therefore shouldn't be resent to anyone other than the
listadmin, and frankly, that is where the darn bounce should be going
anyway).

Technically, the darn bounce IS going to the list admin as the scripts
are running under my user id and that is where many DAEMONS send
bounces.

Your first order of business should be to ensure that those lists
bounce directly to their respective admins.

I RTFM manual for sendmail and the CGI scripts and added the "Reply-To"
etc., headers but some DAEMONS send back to myid(_at_)domain(_dot_)com
regardless.

Your script was very helpful for post-processing. Thank you for that; it
worked perfectly.

I remain however with the situation that I can get all the bounces going
to one account. Now, if there is a method whereby your script can be
adapted to an incoming mailbox and processed in real time, I will have
something workable and my slightly fuzzy "first time using procmail"
communication will have interpreted into something more meaningful.

Procmail would seem to be able to help make the best of a slightly
cruddy situation.

Thank you.

David
