Well guess what, it seems I'm not the only one having problems with
50+MB
mailboxes. Message-id:

Is there a mailbox size limit?
Yes, it is defined by your MTA (Sendmail, postfix, etc)
% grep size_limit /etc/postfix/main.cf
bounce_size_limit = 512000
header_size_limit = 512000
mailbox_size_limit = 53687090
message_size_limit = 10736420
53,687,090 bytes is almost exactly 51MB (1024x1024x50=52,428,800 bytes)
MONTHFOLDER=`date +%b-%Y`
DAYFOLDER=`date +%d-%b-%Y`
YEARFOLDER=`date +%Y`

* ^List-Id:.*procmail\.lists
$MLDIR/\(UnixStuff\)/procmail.$MONTHFOLDER

I know that you believe you understand what you think I said but I am
not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.
