fascism is a "rejection of reason and intelligence"
(that quoted matter belongs within one of the ellipses from the indented
quote above). If there is one best hope for modernity, it is for us
to drag ourselves out of the mud by way of our gifts of reason and
intelligence. (Hey: procmail can help shove us in that direction, wot?)
:-) Critical thinking is what we need; not blind obeisance
Dman, since this is somewhat of a personal attack and an ad hominem
argument, I will respond briefly. It is a rather fascistic and arrogant
argument to assume that reason and faith in God are antithetical. It is not
a well reasoned position, but relies upon assumptions about the misuse of
religion as if that were the only use of faith. It relies upon a caricature
and a straw man argument. This thread started because you decried the
decline of ethics and morals in the student body. My point was merely this:
ethics and morals must be grounded in something or else they are bound to be
relative and matters of convenience. Relativism and assumptions that life
has no ultimate meaning or purpose lead logically to Nietzsche's will to
power and the philosophy of the Superman: Morals are for suckers and fools -
power is what really matters. If lying and plagiarism will get you what you
want, let the "small minded" be bound by a petty concern over morals, since
they are not smart enough to see that morals are built only for the fools
who think they really matter.
Only if morals are grounded in some intrinsic purpose of the Universe can
the value of morals be maintained as necessary to life. Otherwise they are
matters of mere social convention and convenience to be discarded if
"better" end will justify a different means.
If anyone want to continue this discussion, I seriously suggest another
forum: Theologos: <http://groups.yahoo.com/group/theologosAMR/>
It's open for debate on such matters. Belief not required :-)
Respectfully,
Jeff
