You could just assign date via a freestanding assignment:

with the colon lines. But there was obviously somethign else wrong.
BOGUS=`echo "$DATE|$MATCH|$FROM|$SMS" >> $MATCH.log`
I had hoped there's a "better" solution. Anyway, it works, many thanks!
