'procmail' does not Mangle anything because it is only a filter !

Well, yes, one would hope. However, the man page clearly states otherwise:

If there is no Content-Length: field or the -Y option has been speci-
fied and procmail appends to regular mailfolders, any lines in the body of
the message that look like postmarks are prepended with ‘>’ (disarms bogus
mailheaders). The regular expression that is used to search for these
  postmarks is:
              ‘\nFrom ’

(The -Y option is not being specified.)

However, your comments prompted me to investigate a little further, and, in
fact, I _am_ slightly mistaken. The postfix + procmail 3.22 running on my
Linux box is fine. The mangling is happening with sendmail + procmail
v3.11pre7 on a system running Solaris, and I'm relatively certain that the
problem is indeed with procmail, because it doesn't happen if I remove
procmail from the equation.

It's possible that this is something that was fixed somewhere in between
there without the man page being updated (or mentioned in the history file).
Or it's possible that it's addressed in the patch from Debian that Fedora
Core uses. I'll have to check it out. (Unless someone happens to know the
answer already and feels generous.)
