Well, at least that is some clarification - archiving OUTGOING messages
should require a lot less storage by several orders of magnitude than
archiving all the incoming ones (with spam and malware being what they are).
One must wonder if they've considered the issues with users who relay mail
from their computer directly to the SMTP of a target host (bypassing their
own ISP mailhost).
Even if I have only 20% effectif traffic, the cost will explode.
And I will do sabotage... no Virus/SPAM-Filtering!!!
Perhaps you should consider enforcing SMTP authentication - then viruses
and spam (at least the forged variety) are not likely to relay through your
host. This is a good idea even if this archiving thing wasn't on the
table. Now, if you've got some jackass user who IS a spammer, you aught to
give them the boot anyway, so there shouldn't be much spam volume beyond
the initial detection of a spammer user. PLUS, archiving them will assist
you in suing the abusing user anyway.
So must I archiv "internal" traffic of an Enterprise or
Organisation? Those stupid laws can drive someone crazy.
You're probably going to run into storage issues if many of your users have
.sigs as large as yours. <g>
