No, mailman is GNU-ware and it's fairly MTA-agnostic.
Sorry, I was thinking ezmlm I believe (and it might be qmail it's in bed
with?). It utilizes recipient-unique return paths, so that cryptic bounces
(and client-side forwards which result in bounces) can be automatically
handled. IIRC, this relies upon an MTA-specific interfaces.
At this point, I suspect that the OP is seeing issues with
locally-delivered copies of list messages spiking SA loads.
